New Work - small
This landscape, "Orange Field", is a 6" x 6" oil pastel I recently finished. While I am happy with the whole piece, I really like how the clouds evolved. Also, the orange haze in the sky is mimicked in the bottom of the orange field.
I feel like I've hit a stride with the patterned landscapes. I have a few more to share over the next posts, and I am taking photos as I work on another piece. I look forward to sharing the process with you.
These landscapes are inspired by my daily drive to work, which is through the Willamette Valley. A good portion of the scenery is farm land, and I love how the crop rows emerge, the vineyard posts create patterns and the trees provide a natural frame.
What inspires you?
Very cool! I like the clouds too--they look vaguely Asian... =)
I'm doubly inspired, I guess--by my natural surroundings, and by ... well, I was going to say by print stuff, particularly ads, and then I remembered my journal in which I've just sat in one place (first at a swimming pool, then at a cafe) and analyzed everything surrounding me in terms of design inspiration. I was amazed at how much there is to see, and how everything I see can spark other ideas!

It was time to check through. I am trying to catch up with all the folks I haven't visited lately...and am glad I did. Aren't you busy and inspiring!

I live near and row on the Hudson River so it is a major source of inspiration - the colors! There is no color left out when you watch it through the days and seasons. I find the problem is trying to remember what the patterns were that I saw - like this morning the light reflecting on the water was in thin little ribbons in front of me. I try to remember too much and then lose it. I think I need to try to remember one small detail that I come home and sketch or write about each day -
I really enjoy your patterns, how they capture essences of where you are. And I also enjoy what you have to say - about your work and also your life. thank you.
